The Best ever Lemon Poppy Seed Cake

Finally... I baked this classic Lemon Poppy Seed cake!

This has been on my list for a very long time.

I procrastinated as I wasn't sure that I CAN take that much dosage of poppy seed, not that I was afraid that I might go loopy but just in case.

How do you bake a good lemon poppy seed cake from scratch?

This is the easiest and tastiest cake that I have ever baked.
Typing about this cake has make me wanting to bake another.

So how to bake this zesty lemon cake?

I have put together 2 videos:

b) a long version video with step by steps and ingredients, so that you are able to bake along with me.

Baking lemon poppy seed cake

1) sieve dry ingredients eg, flour, corn flour and baking powder
2) Soak poppy seeds in warm milk
3) some lemon rind
4) Cream butter and sugar, add eggs and poppy seeds
5) Add dry ingredients
6) Bake step by step baking lemon poppy seeds cake
This lemon poppy seed loaf cake is unbelievably easy to bake.

I was expecting, like most cake, where you creamed sugar and butter, then add eggs, flour etc!
But this lemon poppy seed cake is a breeze.

Everything into the mixing bowl, start my Kenwood mixer.
5 minutes later, a smooth, pale and creamy cake batter is done.

How long do I have to bake lemon poppy seed cake for?


The only thing that you have to watch out for is during the baking stage.

How to prepare lemon icing or lemon frosting?

Lemon icing was as awesome, not to overly sweet.
Even though I am a sweet tooth person, but I cannot take anything that is too sweet.

A point to note though, do not be too generous with lemon juice in the mix, the mixture will be runny!

How long should I soak poppy seeds?


As indicated in the recipe below, it is best to soak in warm milk for 15 minutes.

Best store in an airtight container.
You may keep them longer if it is place in the refrigerator.

Best consume within 3 days

All was good...
Lemon poppy seed loaf cake slices were soft and moist, the icing served its purpose well, to complimented the lemony flavour of the cake and to hide the ugly crater too :D plus .

Only crumbs were left in the cake box by the third day :D.

Based on Delicious magazine, with very minor change here and there, this recipe is a keeper.

  2. I tried this recipe today and the cake came out amazing. I used a loaf tin and did a cream cheese icing which was a good combination. The baking time was a bit longer than the suggested time but it's worth always checking irrespective of what a recipe suggests. I also added 2 teaspoons of lemon juice. My family only had compliments.

  3. Hi when you mention warm milk does this mean the milk is at room temperature. Should I use full cream milk or fresh milk.

      I use full cream milk. I zapped the milk (from fridge) in microwave for 30 second.
      The milk needs to be warmed slightly above room temperature but not too hot (boiling point)
